Where The Beans Grow?
Alright so let's talk about some of those delicious homegrown green beans that everyone just loves. Okay so I can't say I have gotten much of those this year from my garden. I was able to get enough to freeze for a roast or stew of some sort. But was not as bountiful as I would of like the plants to be.
So story time with bean plants. There isn't much of a story. Just like the rest of the garden we tilled up a spot, did our rows, planted the seeds, watered as much as possible when it wasn't raining. But didn't try to over water. May of involved watering the kids when they got in the way. Of course those hot days they wanted to play in the water. Anyway, our first try with them. The plants had grown a bit and then shriveled up and died. In my mind I'm thinking "What the heck did I do wrong?" As I have done with most of our lovely garden. I proceeded to pull them. Then decided nah I'll leave the plants here see what they do. If they do nothing then we will just till them back into the ground and try again next year.
Some time has gone by, I think it was actually a few weeks to a month. I go out to check carrots and see if our Roma's were up to anything. I glanced over and I had a few pretty good sized beans coming off of the plants. Some of these plants decided to give it another go and there they were producing some good sized beans. Again since it was towards the end of summer we didn't get too many. But was still enough for me to freeze for a meal. You also have to remember with Pole beans that they produce a lot quicker and a lot more beans. Where as the bush beans usually take longer, and only have one go around of veggies.
This is what I learned from all of this. Green beans are very sensitive to their climate and need to be watered daily. I also learned that the pole beans we had, needed to have a trellis or something to climb to help produce more produce. We may also need to work on the soil and make sure it's good for all our crops the next year. Sometimes working the soil is more important than some may thing. You really need to get in there and make sure it has proper nutrients and just the right soil for growth in your beans. Most beans need the same type of environment and conditions to be able to survive. Now we know for next year. Maybe we will do better.
You're missing an opportunity to write about being cooped up with kids during covid.
